Written by the late Glenn J. Sneed, this book is split into
17 chapters, each about one of the 17 southernmost counties of Illinois.
Although it has a lot of typos that should have been corrected. It's out of print
but shows up every once in a while at used book stores in Southern
Illinois.
Handbook of Old Gallatin County and Southeastern Illinois
Reprint of the 1887 history of Gallatin County, plus two new sections on
Early Ancedotes and the Military History of the county. The military section
includes of list of all the known Gallatin County veterans in local units in the Black Hawk,
Mexican, Civil and Spanish-American wars. The fourth section includes more than 250 19th and
early 20th Century biographies of Gallatin County persons. The hardcover edition has sold out,

Caroline Sanders [Saunders?], a contraband Negro (i.e. former
slave rescued from the retreating Confederate lines). Formerly
a slave of Gen. Pillow's. Brought to Cairo, then to Shawneetown
