QRYTEXT: Seeking information on STURGILL family living in Hardin Co. in 1850s, and perhaps a little before and after. My great-great grandmother Mary Ellen Sturgill was born in Hardin Co. around 1852. Her father was Elihu Sturgill (b. in Va., came to Ill. via Ohio). Her mother was Elizabeth ? Sturgill. I believe she was from Hardin Co. and Elihue married her here. Mary Ellen also had several siblings born in Ill. But after Elizabeth died (in late 1860s?), Elihu returned to Lawrence Co., Ohio, where many of his relatives still lived. Most of his children apparently came with him. In the early 1870s, Elihu remarried to Sarah Louderback Holmes (Louderback is her maiden name) and Mary Ellen Sturgill married Anderson Perry Louderback. Sarah was from Lawrence Co., but A.P. was not. I think he was from Bracken Co., KY, but his whereabouts between 1837 (his probable birth) and 1871 (his marriage) remain a mystery. I have often wondered whether Elihu might have met someone in this family while living in Hardin Co. I'm also suspicious Elihu and/or Anderson served in the Union army despite their southern births. They may have met during the war (assuming they met before the marriages). I recently noted the gravestone listing for Mary Ellen Sturgill's little sister, Melissa J. Sturgill, 6-13-1858 to 11-1-1859. She is buried at Whiteside Cemetery in Monroe Precinct (northwestern Hardin Co.). The notation gives her parents as "E.& E.P. Sturgill." Perhaps Elizabeth's maiden name was P-----. Elizabeth must have died not too long after this. Any help at all appreciated -- Frank Taylor Melbourne, Fla.
