BUCY JONES
Bucy Jones was born
March 31, 1860: His birthplace is believed to have been in Georgia or
Florida. Bucy had one sister; Alice
Jones and one brother; Jim Jones. There is no record of their parents. Bucy was
fifteen years old when he married fourteen-year-old Mary Margaret Griffin
daughter of Charlie and Martha Griffin.
Mary had three sisters; Eiiza, Blanche and Lucy and three brothers, Jim,
Charlie and Hill Griffin.
Both Bucy and Mary
were born to slave parents. In 1864 slavery was abolished and it is believed
that both families migrated to Haywood County, TN.
In 1876 the first child was born, they named her Martha Ann after her maternal grandmother, then came Allen, Alice and Jimmie. It is believed during that time the family moved to Lauderdale County. TN and lived some years on the John Tarrant farm. Almost every two years came a baby in this order: William Pinkney, Ora Lee, Willie Lee, and Catherine. "Ruth and Bucy "-twins, Bessie and Julious. In 1900 Bucy and Mary had a baby girl (a big surprise) and named her Charlie Louis. In later years Bucy moved his family to Western Valley, TN and rented land from Joe Wilson and Bryer's.
After several years
of hard work and careful management he bought 60 acres from Mr. Wilson and Mr.
Bryer. The land was wooded and he
cleared it and used the timber to build his family a four-room home. He was very successful with his farm, had a
nice strawberry patch, a large orchard with peaches, apples, pear figs and plum
trees. He was able to sell strawberries
in the spring and fruit in the summer, he had livestock and always kept his
farm nice and well equipped with wells, large barn, two horses, buggy and a
surrey. He had a special black horse
for the buggy and two mules "Pat and Diana" for the surrey.
Bucy passed April 16,
1937. He was buried at St. James CME
Church in Henning, TN.
Mary passed October
19, 1953 in Chicago, IL. She was buried
at St James CME Church in Henning, TN.
