Minor
Jackson Minor, also known as John Minor, was born August 12, 1860 in Forkland, Greene County, AL.
In 1870, Jackson is 10 years old and residing in the home of his maternal grandmother, Sarah Bullock in Forkland, AL. He is unable to read or write and he does not have an occupation. Living next door is his parents, Walton and Margaret Minor and their other children. Ten years later at the 1880 census, Jackson at age 18 is a farm laborer who is not able to read and write. He continues to live with his grandmother next door to his parents.
In 1887, Jackson married Elizabeth James. The wedding took place in the home of her father, Charles James. By 1900 this union had produced five sons and the family had moved to Eutaw, AL. Jackson is a farm laborer at this time.
Before
the 1910 Census this family had migrated to the lumber mill area of Lumberton,
LaMar County, MS. On the 1910 census,
Jackson is identified as a wage employed “Preacher”. By the 1920 census, Jackson and his family were now residing in
Picayune, Pearl River County, MS. His
occupation is recorded as office work in a Dry Good Store.
The
family finally came north to Chicago and lived in the Bronzeville area of the
city. Jackson died in 1954 at the age
of 94
