If you can find death certificates at the state level for genealogical purposes, it is much cheaper than at the county courthouse.
Death records in Illinois were kept on a statewide basis from January 1, 1916.  Some records are found in the counties as early as 1871, and occasionally earlier.

U S  FEDERAL CENSUS MORTALITY SCHEDULES, 1850--1880 UPDATED INDEX
 
Note that in 1870 parents birthplaces were added.

In 1880 supplemental schedule "Dependent, Defective, and Delinquent classes were included,  Illinois included :insane and idiots.
In addition to the individual's name, their race, gender, age and residence were also included. For individuals with mental or physical illness, questions regarding their medical history were asked.

Selected U S Federal census Non-population schedule 1850-1880 included Illinois database for agriculture, industry, manufactures, social stations, and SUPPLEMENTAL SCHEDULES. This schedule included different forms to enumerate the following classes of schedules: INSANE, IDIOTS, DEAF-MUTES, BLIND, PAUPERS AND INDIGENT PERSONS, HOMELESS CHILDREN, PRISONERS.
ILLINOIS IS ONE OF THE STATES CURRENTLY  OFFERING A DATABASE INDEX TO DEATHS OCCURRING IN ILLINOIS.
 
The Jacksonville State Hospital for the Insane was located in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois.  THE 1860-1880 MORTALITY SCHEDULE IS INCLUDED IN THE  U.S. FEDERAL 1860-1880 CENSUS SCHEDULE.  If you had a relative in that institution during that time period--you may uncover some additional information  not obtainable in any other record available to the public.
