OLD TIMER TELLS OF EARLIER DAYS - One of Jefferson County's older
citizens, William R. CARROLL, 80, who lives near Bonnie, IL, relates a very
interesting story of how things used to be.

Mr. CARROLL for about 60 years made and sold sorghum molasses and during
his career as a molasses dealer remembers how the price varied from 25 cents
per gallon to $1.50 per gallon. He also tells of the times when he would
drive 3 or 4 miles to a place to get one bushel of corn made into corn meal
at which time the price for grinding was 10 cents.

About 25 years ago, Billy, as he is more commonly know to his intimate
friends, went on a visit in the West and when he returned to Bonnie, be
brought with him a bottle of water from the ocean. He states that the bottle is
still half full of ocean water and none has been taken out except what
    evaporated.

Mr. CARROLL has been quite ill for the past few days.
