JUNE 10 1951 55 YEARS AGO TODAY- MR AND MRS R.W.LYON GAVE A DINNER PARTY TO A NUMBER OF YOUNG LADIES AT THEIR HOME ON TAYLOR AVE, IN HONOR OF THEIR DAUGHTER, MRS LENA LYON POLLOCK OF AVALON FL. MRS C.H. PATTON RETURNED LAST NIGHT FORM LOUISVILLE WHERE SHE HAD BEEN ATTENDING THE SUPREME LODGE KNIGHTS OF HONOR.
JUNE 20 1951 40 YEARS AGO TODAY- While driving from Mt Vernon to her home northwest of the city, Mrs Norman Piercy and child were thrown from the buggy when the horse became frightened at an automobile and ran away. John Leo Warner and Nina Hutchison were united in marriage at the First M.E. church parsonage last evening
JUNE 20 1951 35 YEARS AGO TODAY- W.S.Easton general freight and passenger agent of the W.C. and W. Railroad, has resigned and will go to Riverside Ca, where he has a fine railroad position.
JUNE 20 1951 30 YEARS AGO TODAY- Arthur Long who is a member of the Mt Vernon police force, has been notifeied that he and his brother and sisters are heirs to a 40,000 estate left by an aunt in England.
JUNE 20 1951 25 YEARS AGO TODAY- Miss Beatrice Geneva Hayden died this morning at four o'clock at the family home- 212 S.6th street, with typhoid fever.
JUNE 20 1951 20 YEARS AGO TODAY- Mrs G.E. Willus mother of E.E.Willus of this city died this morning at the family home in Enfield.
JUNE 20 1951 15 YEARS AGO TODAY- John Cave was confined to his home on south 17th street today with injuries received late yesterday when he attempted to alight from an L and N freight train in the east yards. State highway patrolmen from three southern districts will open a two day session at the National Guard rifle range north of Mt Vernon Monday morning. About 90 officers were expected to attend.
JUNE 20 1951 10 YEARS AGO TODAY- Miss Julia Black and Phillip Evans were married Thursday evening at 5;30 in Florida. Ralph Fenton Jr. of this city, who joined the U.S. Army, August 1 1939 is in the Medical Corps in the Hawaiian Islands. Burglars who used a piece of brick to break the window of Gift Chest Jewelers store, 920 Main about 3;30 am today, escaped with seven or eight men's wrist watches valued at about $250. Mr. and Mrs. Max Cornick announce the marriage of their daughter Elaine to Jerome Lee Glassman of Benton, which took place in St Louis this morning.

H ammond of Martinsville. The wedding will take place June 30 in Martinsville, former home of Mrs Beutler. ** Mrs and Mrs Ray Gardner of Woodlawn, are announcing the marriage of their daughter ILa Mae to Sam Smith, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Smith of Mt Vernon. The double ring ceremony was performed June 15, at 4:30 at the Central Church of Christ in Mt Vernon, performed by Rev. Grant Hawkins. Mr and Mrs Roy Smith served as the couples attendants. Immediately following the ceremony, the young couple left for Sidney, Neb., where they will make their home. The bridegroom is employed in the oil fields there. ** Mrs Ivan Carter was hostess at a pre-nupital shower in honor of Miss Betty Lou Wilt, Friday evening at her home on north 8th street.

NEWS Two Gas Stations Are Burglarized Here Last Night Thieves broke into two Mt. Vernon gasoline service stations last night. Sometime during the night they entered the Mobilgas Station at 14th and Broadway taking numerous items valued at total of $45.25. They pushed out a window to enter the North Shell service station for the second time in three nights. The loot this time amounted to only 50 cents in coins. City police reported that the thieves took many items from the 14th and Broadway station. They included six cigaret(sic) lighters, four cartons of cigarets(sp)a miniature blow torch,a spot light,12 pocket combs,four packages of candy,six packages of potato chips,four packages of corn curls,four ball point pencils,12 candy bars,two ball point pins,and four bicycle horns. They also tried to break into the popcorn machine. ** Rain Is Timed Over Mt. Vernon. The weather was the subject of an unusual telephone conversation here yesterday afternoon. Calling from the city park, a resident asked a friend who resides in northeast Mt. Vernon'' How do you like this rain?" "What rain?" was the answer. "Its raining by the bucket fulls at city park" said caller. "Not a single drop has fallen in this part of town "was the answer. The friends conducted an experiment, kept their conversation going until the rain reached the northeast part. The time for the rain to cross town was 11 minutes and 20 seconds. ** Boy, 4, Struck By Bat, Suffers Skull Fracture Gary Davis, four year old son of city clerk and Mrs Lester Davis of 603 south 15th street, suffered a skull fracture yesterday when he was struck by a baseball bat while playing with another boy. Gary was struck behind the left ear,at the base of the skull. He was taken to Good Samaritan hospital where x-rays showed a fracture. Gary was knocked unconscious for a short time but was able to be taken home last night and is apparently doing well.
