George Wayman Campbell

George Wayman CAMPBELL, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles CAMPBELL, was born in 
Jefferson County, May 5, 1896. He died at the Josephine Hospital in 
St. Louis on November 29, 1921. Age 25y6m24d. At the age of 12 years 
he was converted and joined Bethany Baptist Church near Waltonville and 
had lived a devoted Christian life.  

He answered the call of his country in 1917. He was made Corporal of 
his company shortly after entering the service and later was made Sergeant 
Company D 326th machine gun battalion. After intensive training in camps 
in this country he was sent to France where he spent one year in active service.  
He was honorably discharged from the service July 26, 1919. Upon his return 
to the United States, he returned to Jefferson County and about two years ago 
he came to DuQuoin with his parents. Over a year ago he became connected with 
the Southern Illinois Light and Power Company as a lineman. He was injured 
November 19, while at work, by coming in contact with a live wire, which resulted 
in death.  After being injured he was rushed to the hospital in St. Louis where 
everything possible was done to save his life.  

Three weeks ago he was united in marriage to Miss Eva Bowlin of DuQuoin, IL.  
Besides his sorrowing mother and father he leaves to mourn his death his faithful 
and devoted wife, one brother Jack in the service at Ellington Field, Houston, Texas.  
He also leaves six sisters: Mrs. Myrta WEVER of Mt. Vernon; Mrs. Gussie HICKS of 
Oakdale; Mrs. Lela HAMILTON and Mrs. Mattie LEMMON both of Waltonville; Mrs. Velma THOMAS 
of DuQuoion; and Miss Willie at home with her parents; also other relatives and 
numberless friends. He was a kind and loving husband, son and brother. All through 
his sickness was very patient and always had a smile for everyone. Just to know him 
was to love him.
