OBITUARIES

 
William A. DAVIS,  Ex-Circuit Clerk died at his home in McClellan township 
six miles southwest of Mt. Vernon, at 12 o'clock last night after a lingering illness. 
Deceased was a native of Jefferson county having been born within a few miles of 
where he died, January 16, 1846. Mr. DAVIS was educated in the public schools 
and as a young man devoted himself assiduously to farming in which he was eminently 
successful. 
November 29, 1870 he was married to Nancy G. DAVIS, daughter of 
Joseph M. and Rebecca DAVIS. Of this union seven children were born. His wife 
died in 1890 and in February of the following year he was wedded to Miss Nancy 
CROSNOE who survives her husband. Of the second marriage two children were 
born of which but one is living. Mr. DAVIS was an ardent Democrat and held a number 
of county and township offices. In 1884 he filledl out the unexpired term of Joseph Carroll 
as county treasurer and four years later was elected to the office of circuit clerk. He has 
also served the people acceptably as town clerk, supervisor and justice of the peace for 
several years. On his retirement he purchased the Senator ALLEN farm of 260 acres 
where he has since resided. 
The funeral will take place of Wolf Prairie church, five miles south of this city, at 10 o'clock 
Sunday morning. The services will be conducted by Rev. L. F. LAWRENCE of the M.E. 
church (south) of Odin who was a former neighbor and friend of the deceased. Although, 
not a member of any church, Mr. DAVIS' leanings were towards that of the Baptist faith of 
which denomination many of his most intimate friends were communicants. He was at one 
time a member of Mt. Vernon lodge A.F.& A M. Friends are invited to the obsequies
