OBITUARY:  The Mt. Vernon Register News published the following on Wednesday, 
March 8, 1944 which read:
 "Emma Frances Dodds, a member of one of Jefferson 
county's oldest and best known families died yesterday at her home, 214 south 
17th street at 5 p.m. following an illness of five years duration.  She was 
82 years, one month and 27 days old.  Mrs. Dodds was born January 10, 1862 
the daughter of James W. and Augusta (Kinney) Philp who came to Jefferson 
county from the south in 1839 and settled near Waltonville.  She was married 
October 9, 1881 to Wilburn Neal Dodds who preceded her in death November 10, 
1937.  Two sons, John and Harry both of Mt. Vernon, a brother Charles T. 
Philp of Grover, Colorado, and a sister, Mrs. George McMeen of Los Angeles, 
Calif., and two grandsons survive.  One grandson is Pvt. Thomas P. Dodds who 
is stationed at the Unversity of San Francisco in California.  Mr. Dodds was 
preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ida Newell of Waltonville, and two 
brothers, Walter Philp of Waltonville and Dr. Harry Philp of Benton.  The 
Rev. Clyde Todd will conduct the funeral service at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon 
at the Hawkins and Pulley Funeral Home.  Burial will take place at Knob 
Prairie cemetery near Waltonville.  Mrs. Dodds has been a member of the 
Methodist church in Mt. Vernon since 1893.  She was a faithful worker in the 
church and took an active part in all its affairs until her health began to 
fail.  She was friendly and unselfish and made and retained many friends 
throughout her lifetime.  The body will lie in state at the Hawkins and 
Pulley Funeral home."
