Jewell A. Dorofey

Jewell A. Dorofey, 85, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of 
Aberdeen, Maryland, died at 10:15 p.m. Oct. 20, 2005. 
She was a retired elementary school teacher. 

Mrs. Dorofey was born Aug. 20, 1920 at Lamesa, Texas to Albert 
and Roxie Ann (Ham) Gaines. She married Michael T. Dorofey in Elkton, 
Maryland on June 21, 1946. He preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1999. 

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2005 in the chapel 
at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. with Rev. David Eadie and 
Rev. Annelle Ruemmler officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, 
Oct. 23, 2005 at Hughey Funeral Home. 

She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth "Libby" Griffin and husband, 
John of Mt. Vernon, Jennifer G. Katona and husband, Darryl of Severn, MD.; 
four grandchildren, Jeffrey Katona of Severn, MD, Julie Griffin and special 
friend, John Ritter of St. Louis, MO., John Michael Griffin and wife, 
Stephanie of Woodlawn; two great granddaughters, Sabryn and Jadyn Griffin; 
two brothers, Albert "Dude" Gaines and wife, Betty of Albuquerque, NM., 
Arlie "Herman" Gaines and wife, Jo of Midland, TX. Several nieces and 
nephews also survive. Her care giver was Barbara Chizk of Mt. Vernon. 

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers 
and two sisters.

Jewell A. Dorofey was a member of the First United Methodist Church in 
Mt. Vernon, was active with Wesleyan Service Women at the church and 
the Angels on Assignment program and was former long-time member of Grove 
Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen, Maryland. 

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Angels on Assignment and 
will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral home, 
P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Arrangements have been entrusted to the
