Estella C. Newell

Estella C. Newell died at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday at her home, 
500 S. 18th street, at the age of 82 years, two months, and 
26 days. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. 
Saturday at Myers Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Stables officiating. 
Burial will be in Black cemetery, in McClellan township. The body 
will lie in state at Myers Chapel where friends may call after 3:00 p.m. 
Friday. 

Mrs. Newell was born April 18, 1883, in Fayette county, the daughter 
of James and Josephine (Cantrell) Merriman. On Dec. 19, 1907, in Jefferson 
county, she was married to Asa Newell, who preceded her death on Mar. 27, 1946. 
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Lacey of Waltonville and 
Mrs. Velma McNeil of Mt. Vernon; three sons, Joe Newell of Waltonville and 
Herbert Newell of Woodlawn; a brother, Herman Merriman of Mt. Vernon; 10 
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Newell was a member of the 
West Long Prairie Christian Church.
