The Cheffer Family |
 |
Joseph and Henriette (Lavigne) Cheffre settled with their family in St.
Anne around 1852. They were one of the many families who followed Father
Chiniquy to Kankakee County with dreams of a better life. Soon after
settling, the church split and so did the Cheffre brothers. My great-great
grandfather Pierre continued to practice the Catholic faith and moved to
Kankakee in 1861 to take up practice as a stonecutter. His father and many
of the brothers followed Father Chiniquy into his new faith. I think this
caused a major rift in the family and believe that those who chose to
remain Catholic left St. Anne. In my research, I have not yet found any
Cheffers who do not trace their lines back to Joseph and Henriette. I
think that any Cheffers in the US are most likely their descendents. I am
interested in finding out about any branch of the family, so please contact
me if you are a Cheffer!
