Preface
These marriage records were gleaned from early issues of the Kendall County Record and Kendall County News. The
marriages listed can be classified in one of the following ways.
Marriages that occurred in Kendall County but were not recorded at the County Clerk's office. Initially marriage
reporting was spotty. Some ministers, priests, and Justice of the Peace were more responsive than others to the
requirement that marriages should be reported to the County Clerk. The much beloved Reverend Andrew Chapman, in
particular, was slow to fulfill the letter of the law. Many early marriages performed by Rev. Chapman were not
recorded at the County Clerk's office. However, he was not the only one remiss in his duty as marriages performed
by others also fell through the cracks.
Marriages that occurred after the period included in previously published Kendall County civil marriage records.
Previously published marriage records covered the period from May 1841 into September 1915.
Marriages of folks living in Kendall County that occurred outside of the county. Many Kendall County residents
were married in nearby counties, Chicago, their old home in Indiana, New York, etc.
Marriages by folks who had been residents of Kendall County at some point in time. Some were not living in Kendall
County at the time of their marriage, but their families may have resided in Kendall County and one or both parties
to the marriage probably called Kendall County their home.
Marriages of folks who lived on the perimeter of Kendall County who were known well enough to make their marriage
newsworthy in at least one of the newspapers reviewed.
