[Page 14] THOMAS DEAN CATLIN - Born Clinton, Oneida Co., New York, March 12, 1838. His parents were Marcus and Philena (DEAN) CATLIN. His father was professor of math. At Hamilton College, at Clinton. Was of English descent and died in 1849. On mother’s side, Mr. CATLIN descends from an old historic family of New York. His mother comes from a family that founded Deansville, New York. In 1795, John DEAN, a Quaker went to that place as a missionary. He died there in 1820, aged eighty-eight years. He had a son, Thomas DEAN, who also was a missionary among the Indians. He died in June 1842, at sixty-three years. He had five children, among them was Mrs. Philena CATLIN. Her son, Thomas DEAN CATLIN, went to Hamilton College, at Clinton, New York, and graduated in 1857. In 1858 came to Ottawa, Illinois, to meet his uncle, A. H. REDFIELD, of Detroit, who was Indian agent. In 1863, Thomas was secretary of the Illinois & Mississippi Telegraph Co., which had been established in 1849. In 1884 was elected vice president of the National City Bank of Ottawa, and in 1890 it’s president. Also president of the State Bank, of Seneca, Ill. In 1866 he married Miss Helen C. PLANT, a resident of Utica, New York. Their only child, James PLANT CATLIN.
