[Page 106] CAPTAIN ANGUS ROSS MERCER - Superintendent of the United States Silica Company of Ottawa. Born in Ontario, Canada, April 11, 1858, of Scotch ancestry and many of the family were sea-faring men. His father, Captain Alexander MERCER was captain of vessels that sailed on the great lakes, and his father, Robert MERCER, was on the “high-seas.” Our subject started as a young boy, sailing on the great lakes. Finally became owner of a ship. In 1895, he became Superintendent of the Silica Company. Capt. Alexander MERCER married Miss Ellen SPRINGSTEIN, native of Canada, and they had two children: Angus R. and W. F. The latter now lives in Michigan. Capt. Angus R. MERCER married June 26, 1881 to Miss Pauline FELZ. She is daughter of Valentine FELZ, of Grand Haven, Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. MERCER have three children: May R.; Valentine Alexander; and Hugh.
