IRA Smith, Sr.

Ira Smith Sr. of Oakford died Friday, January 19 at 3:58 p.m. at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was 75 years of age.

Mr. Smith was born July 8, 1914 in Cane Valley in Adair County, KY and son of Farris Thurman and Allie Karnes Smith. He married Nettie Goodin on September 23, 1930 in Knifley, Ky, and she preceded him in death on December 12, 1972. A member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, he farmed and had worked as a carpenter for many years.

Surviving are four sons, Ira Smith Jr. of Campbellsville, Ky, Marshall G. Smith of Nashville, Tenn. Raymond F. Smith of Springfield and Ronald I. Smith of Middletown, six daughters, Doris A Mills of Oakford. Mary Frances Dismore of Pomona, Calif. Ruby Sue Sinclair of Eldon, Mo. Sylvan Kay Terry of Kansas City, Mo. Linda L. Vogt of Jacksonville and Sharon R. McElroy of Hull, Ga. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren, six brothers, Leslie Smith of Pleasant Plains, Johnnie Smith of Tallula, Willie Smith of Carnation, Wash. Delwin Smith of Jamstown, Ky. Bennie Smith of Lebanon, Ind. And Willard Smith of Springfield, two sisters, Amsel Myles and Margaret Squires, both of Louisville, Ky and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three daughters, Janet L. Burress, Esther K. Stavely and Gellaine Hardy, several grandchildren and one sister, Anna Lee McAllister.

Services were held Monday, January 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Randal K. Ray and Rev Verne E. Gerdes officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive Cemetery, near Chandlerville. Hurley Funeral Home of Petersburg was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Menard County Paramedic Unit.

Mrs. Smith is dead at 57

Mrs. Nettie Smith of rural Chandlerville died at 6:30 Tuesday evening, Dec. 12 at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield. She was 57 years old.

Mrs. Smith was born at Knifley, Ky. Nov. 4, 1915, the daughter of W. R. and Betty Thomas Goodin. She was married Sept. 23, 1930 to Ira Smith w ho survives.

Other survivors include her father, W.R. Goodin of Columbia, Ky, four sons Ira Smith Jr. of Tampa, Fla: Marshall Smith, Petersburg: Raymond Smith, Athens,: Ronald Smith, Joliet: eight daughters, Mrs. Esther Hunter and Mrs. Sylvn Kingman, Joliet, Mrs. Doris Mills, Oakford, Mrs Mary Frances Dinsmore, Chandlerville, Mrs. Ellaine Hardy, Irvington Ky, Mrs. Ruby Sinclair, Goose Bay Labrador, Mrs. Linda Vogt and Mrs. Sharon Baylor, Petersburg, one brother Howard Goodin, Marseilles, Ill., three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Schroeder, Springfield, Mrs. Eva Schock, Hershey, Pa, and Mrs. Pauline Renken, Mitchell, S.D., 36 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her mother, one daughter and one brother preceded her in death.

The body was taken to the Hurley Funeral Home, Petersburg, where services were held at 1:30 Saturday afternoon, Dec. 16, Rev. Wayne Espeseth officiating. Burial as in Mt. Olive Cemetery near Chandlerville.
