Gazette-Patriot, Carrollton, Ill., Thursday, August 28, 2003, from an article about the "Greene County Days" activities: This cemetery is well-cared for and accepts donations mailed to Sandy Chaudoin, (Athensville Cemetery Association), Rt. 1 - Box 280, Greenfield, Ill. 62044. Isham Wood donated the necessary land, and the cemetery's first recorded burial took place in 1851. Some surnames of this cemetery include Armstrong, Barnard, Barrow, Budke, Caffery, Cooley, Costello, Crum, Driver, Drugger, Etter, Ferguson, Fitzsimmons, Gutherie, Hart, Jackson, Johnson, King, Lindsey, Maberry, McBride, McCracken, Middleton, Moore, Morrow, Nix, Patterson, Phillips, Prather, Rimbey, Shores, Smith, Standridge, Stoddard, Story, Voyles, Wood and Wyatt."
This cemetery, on the north edge of Athensville, is notable for the large number of funeral home markers on graves instead of tombstones. When Cecil Tendick, a well- known Jacksonville historian and journalist, visited this cemetery on May 7, 1970, he remarked it was "the most bereft of tombstones of any cemetery I ever saw."
