Missouri officials investigating deaths of Pike County couple
By Beth Zumwalt

Officials in Audrain County, Mo., are calling the deaths of a Pike County man and woman found dead there Monday a double suicide."At this time, each is believed to have taken their own lives," said Pat Farner, Audrain County coroner, who said no note was found at the scene.

According to Audrain County Sheriff Stuart Miller, the bodies of John R. Campbell, 47, New Canton, and Jean Horner, 31, also of New Canton, were found northwest of Mexico.

Both individuals died of single gunshot wounds to the head. Autopsies on both bodies were performed in Columbia Tuesday morning.According to Miller, his office received a call about 8 a.m. Saturday of a vehicle with Illinois plates being parked in a field. Upon investigation, deputies found the car had not been reported stolen and discontinued their investigation.

The car remained in the field Monday and officers were called to resume their investigation. The bodies of Campbell and Horner were found about one-half mile from the car behind a line of trees, according to Miller.

The couple was last seen in New Canton on Friday. Campbell operated a garage in New Canton, across from the gas station, near Bill Lynch's welding shop.

According to Pike County Sheriff Paul Petty, both Campbell and Horner had recently been interviewed in a criminal matter. Campbell had a prior conviction for sexual abuse and was registered with the Illinois State Police as a sex offender.

Two Pike County deputies went to Audrain County Monday to assist in the investigation.

The investigation is continuing.
