BALLARD, GLENN K.

Glenn K. Ballard, 76, of Hettick, formerly of Carrollton died on Sunday evening Jan. 16, 2005 at Barnes/Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born in Carrollton on Dec. 16, 1928 he was the son of the late Louis J. and Ada Kelly Ballard. He married the former Wanda Killebrew in 1951 in White Hall and she survives.

Also surviving are a daughter: Glenda Hipkins Howard of Carrollton and her companion Jesse Downey, three sons: Lon (wife Debbie) Ballard of Peoria, Harold "Hal" (wife Rhonda) Ballard of San Diego, Calif., Douglas Ballard of Hettick, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, a sister: Joyce (husband Dale) Wiles of St. Petersburg, Fla., four brothers: William (wife Ruth) Ballard of Muskogee, Okla., Louis (wife Lorraine) Ballard of Carrollton, Joe (wife Katie) Ballard of Springfield and Darrell (wife Elizabeth) Ballard of Mt. Dora, Fla. He was preceded in death by two brothers James and Richard Ballard.

Mr. Ballard was a graduate of Carrollton High School and served in the armed forces after World War II. He worked for the Gazette Patriot in Carrollton from 1950-1961 and later for the St. Louis Post Dispatch from 1962-1982 as a typesetter. He loved the outdoors (hunting & fishing) and athletics.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with burial to follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery.

CAMDEN, LEONARD V.

CARROLLTON - Leonard V. Camden, 72, died at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1992, at home.

The World War II U.S. Army veteran was a multiple bronze star winner in the European Theater and a retired employee of Laclede Steel Co.

Born in Boss, Mo., on Aug. 12, 1920, he was a son of the late Rolla and Blanche (Dotson) Camden.

He married the former Betty Miller on Dec. 26, 1945, in Alton. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Lita Gibson of Hardin and Bettina Hallinan of Aikin, S.C.; two grandchildren; and a brother, Lowell Camden of Carrollton.

A sister, Lottie Hopwood, preceded him in death.

Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton with the Rev. Richard Nations officiating.

Burial is in Carrollton City Cemetery.


EARLY, VELMA MCADAMS

Former Carrollton resident Mrs. Velma Early, 96, died at 9:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton.

She was born Feb. 14, 1908, in Carrollton, the daughter of Grant U. and Myrtle M. (Sherman) McAdams. She married Othel E. Early in 1924, and he died in 1969.

Surviving are two daughters, Rosalee Johnson of Godfrey and Elsie Mae Griswold of Ogden, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, H.T. McAdams of Carrollton.

Preceding her in death were three sisters, Addie M. Howard, Letha Painter, and Elsie Wiles; and two brothers, Howard McAdams and Harvey McAdams.

Mrs. Early was a licensed beauty operator most of her life. She was a member of the Carrollton First Baptist Church and Mt. Gilead Club.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. today, Thursday, at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, until funeral service time at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Carrollton City Cemetery.

EYER, HARRY A.

Gazette-Patriot, Carrollton, Ill., Thursday, October 5, 1989

Former Greene County resident Harry A. Eyer, 75, of Jerseyville died Monday afternoon, Oct. 2, 1989, at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville.

Born in Carrollton Sept. 7, 1914, son of Frank and Myrtle (Jackson) Eyer, he married Wilma Cooper on Nov. 3, 1937, in St. Charles, Mo. She survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sisters, Pearl Jackson of Carlinville and Edith Russell of Alton.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Eyer and Roy Eyer; three sisters, Ethol Sexton, Ethel Howard and Effie Eyer.

Mr. Eyer ran a retail grocery store in Medora for a number of years. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of the Wood River Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter in Tampa, Fla.

Visitation was Wednesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday. Burial will follow at Carrollton City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Jerseyville Southern Baptist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.


FRALEY, RALPH LOREN

Ralph Loren Fraley, 72, of Carrollton died at his home in rural Carrollton on Thursday, March 10, 2005, after a short battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 13, 1933, in rural Jersey County, the son of Estel and Mildred (Deveining) Fraley. He married the former Billy Lou Hildred July 17, 1953, just before shipping overseas, and she survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters and sons-in-law, Debby and Fred Wolfe of Mahomet, Sherry Fraley and Darold Range of Greenfield, and Luci and Brian Strotheide of Maryville; six grandchildren, Jesse Range, Montana Martin, Dakota Williams, Elias Fraley, Benjamin and Madison Strotheide; two sisters, Mamie Shelton of Fieldon and Lila "Sis" Vanausdoll of Eldred; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Fraley of Carrollton and Mary Fraley of Clarence, Mo.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lance Fraley; two brothers, Orville Fraley and Raymond Fraley; and two brothers-in-law, Don Shelton and Willie Vanausdoll.

A 1951 graduate of Jersey Community High School, Mr. Fraley served his country in the Korean Conflict as a Sgt. First Class in the U.S. Army. He was a self-employed farmer all his life, first in Macoupin County near Shipman and moving to Greene County in 1964 where he and his wife purchased the farm near Carrollton where she still lives. He farmed for several years in a partner-ship with his brother, Raymond, until his retirement in 1996. After retiring, he raised poultry and produced a huge garden until a few months before his death.

He and his wife were members of the Jersey County Grand Squares square dance club for nearly 20 years. He was also a member of the Carrollton United Methodist Church and Greene County Farm Bureau.

Visitation was Saturday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, where funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. John Shelton and the Rev. Paul Shelton officiating. Musical selections included "The Old Man," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and "Wind Beneath My Wings."

Casketbearers were Doug Fraley, Mark Fraley, Eli Fraley, Gary Petry, Jess Range, Montana Martin, David Shelton and Brian Strotheide. Honorary bearers were Dakota Williams, Darold Range, Fred Wolfe and Benjamin Strotheide. Burial was at Carrollton City Cemetery where military rites were conducted by the Greenfield and Carrollton American Legion posts. "Taps" was played by Tracy Flanagan and Jill White.

GILBERT, CLARA ADLINE BUSHNELL

Mrs. Clara Adline Gilbert, 90, of Carrollton died at 6:32 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 14, 1914, in Woodville Township in Greene County, the daughter of Rueben and Georgia (Tucker) Bushnell. At the age of 17 she married Julius "Jude" Gilbert, Sr. Feb. 27, 1932, in Carrollton, and he died Oct. 24, 2000.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Julius Gilbert, Jr. and Lyness and Marjorie Gilbert of Carrollton, and Clarence "Ed" and Brenda Gilbert of Eldred; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Fraley of Clarence, Mo.

Preceding her in death were a daughter-in-law, Vernita Gilbert; three sisters, Oma Weller, Eva Retherford and Jesse Burnett; and two brothers, Howard Bushnell and Linus Bushnell.

Mrs. Gilbert attended rural Greene County schools. She and her husband spent 68 years working together on their farm where they reared their three sons.

Visitation was Wednesday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, at the First Assembly of God Church in Jerseyville, with the Rev. Randy Cartwright officiating. She will be buried beside her husband at the Carrollton City Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the First Assembly of God Church in Jerseyville.


KEELEY, DELBERT MYRLE

CARROLLTON - Delbert Myrle Keeley, 86, died at 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at Jerseyville Health Care Center in Jerseyville.

Born June 7, 1911, near Jerseyville, he was the son of the late Meade D. and Margaret "Alice" Short Keeley.

The Greene County farmer married the former Norma L. Gernigin March 27, 1937, in Kane. She survives.

Also surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Noel M. and Joyce Keeley of Carrollton; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Keeley of Fieldon; two grandsons, S.Sgt. David E, Keely and Mark Edward Keeley; two step-grandsons, Robert L. Thompson Jr. and James Ray Thompson; and three great-grandchildren, Sarah Keeley, Kristen and Kelly Thompson.

He was preceded in death by a son, Neil E. Keeley; two brothers, Kent and Kermit Keeley; and a sister, Lois Schmidt.

Mr. Keeley was a graduate of the Carrollton High School Class of 1929 and a member of the Greene County Farm Bureau.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Duane Davis will officiate.

Burial will be in the Carrollton City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Greene County Visiting Nurses.


KLEMME, ELLEN BRANNAN

Ellen B. Klemme, 85, of Jerseyville died Sunday at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis.

Born in Eldred on Jan. 19, 1920 she was the daughter of the late William T. and Christina Witascheck Brannan. She graduated from Carrollton High School in 1938.

She married Hugh Klemme on Jan. 5, 1941 in Pittsfield. They moved to Van Nuys, Calif. that same year and both worked for Lockheed-Martin Corp. in Burbank, Calif. She retired in 1975 and her husband in 1982. In August of 1983 they moved to Jerseyville to be nearer to their families. Her husband died April 16, 1995. She is survived by a sister, June Ivers of Eldred and a brother: John T. Brannan of Carrollton; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and husband and two sisters, Wilma Bilbrey and Doris Wessel.

She was a member of the Jerseyville First Baptist Church.

Friends may call on Thursday, March 10, at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 11, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow in the Carrollton City Cemetery. LITTLE, JUDITH ANN BLACKSTONE

Judith Ann "Judy" Little, 58, of the Pittsfield HealthCare Center died in the Center Sunday, March 6, 2005, following a long battle with diabetes.

She was born April 15, 1946 in Carrollton to the late Robert N. and Marjorie Robinson Blackstone. She married Larry Lee Little June 22, 1968 in Carrollton and he died May 11, 1999.

Judy was a 1964 graduate of Carrollton Community High School. She was also a graduate of Miss Hickey's School for Secretaries in St. Louis, Mo.

Prior to her marriage she was employed as a medical secretary for Jacksonville State Hospital.

Her greatest pleasures were spending time with her grandchildren and receiving visits from friends.

Survivors include two sons, Justin L. Little of Pittsfield and Eric J. Little of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Jason, Kenneth and Elizabeth Little of Perry; one step-granddaughter, Denna Browning of Perry; one sister, Janet (husband Milton Jr.) Laneand of Pittsfield; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Ackley of Waverly, Marilyn Hileman of Patterson, Sharolyn Rice of Quincy; a brother-in-law, Dale( wife Ruby) Little of Roodhouse; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers-in-law, James "Jim" Hileman and William "Bill" Rice.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.

There was no visitation. Graveside rites were Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Carrollton City Cemetery. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton were in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to The American Diabetes Association or the First Presbyterian Church of Carrollton in care of the funeral home.

MARTIN, CARL

Carl Martin, 88, of Eldred, died Thursday, March 10 at the Calhoun Care Center in Hardin.

He was born April 25, 1916 in Eldred, the son of Melvin and Elsie Bushnell Martin.

He married Neva Wiles on June 20, 1942 and she preceded him in death on Oct. 11, 1964. He later married Dorothy Saupe on Aug. 15, 1968 and she survives.

He is also survived by one son, Wesley Martin of Farmington; one daughter, Charlene Hellyer of Lewiston; one stepson, Clifford Saupe of Warsaw, Mo.; one step-daughter, Oletta Saupe of Catangia, Sicily, Italy; fifteen grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Martin.

Mr. Martin was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army and a member of the Eldred American Legion Post 1135. He farmed and was a carpenter until 1971 then became the yard supervisor at Alton Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1982. He also had been a professional boxer. He was a member of the Eldred Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, superintendent and B.Y.F. leader, and was a member of the Stuart Pierson Masonic Lodge #50 in Carrollton.

Funeral services will be held immediately following the Masonic services. Burial will be at the Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Greene County Health Department.


MCADAMS, PATSY GWEN BRIDGES

Patsy Gwen McAdams, age 74, of White Hall, died Monday morning, Jan. 24, 2005 at the White Hall Nursing & Rehab. Center.

She was born Sept. 26, 1930 in White Hall, the daughter of Truman and Cecil Lorton Bridges.

She is survived by one daughter, Patricia (husband, Mickey) DeOrnellas of Roodhouse; three sons, Rick (wife, Patti) Whitehead of Girard; Michael H.G. (wife, Lucinda) McAdams of Springfield and Dustin Westmoreland of White Hall; thirteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert Bridges of Kentucky and William Bridges of New Jersey.

Mrs. McAdams worked at the Green Meadows Nursing Home in White Hall for many years and then worked for Community Care, caring for people in their homes, retiring in 1992.

The family will meet friends from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Private interment will be in the Carrollton City Cemetery. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.airsman-hires.com.

75 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 27, 1930

Harry Murphy, 29, a World War veteran, died of tuberculosis at the National Soldiers Home Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisc., Feb. 19. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Murphy of Carrollton, he married Velma Sullivan March 29, 1921, and they were parents of four children. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church.

PAINTER, EVERETT F.

Former Carrollton resident Everett F. "Skinny" Painter, 102, a resident of the Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton for the last seven years, died on Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Alton Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 19, 1902, near Belltown, the son of David and Lucy (Johnson) Painter. He married the former Letha McAdams April 10, 1934, in Carrollton, and she died Sept. 19, 1993.

Surviving are his special care-givers, Virginia Painter Warford of Granite City, Rosalee Early Johnson of Alton, and Louisa Mae Howard Taylor of Roodhouse; his goddaughter, Janette Johnson of Alton; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Painter; and four sisters, Cecil Schultz, Flossie Rollins, Alma Hubbard, and Esther Ford.

Mr. Painter was a former deputy sheriff of Greene County. He and his wife oversaw the Greene County Farm east of Carrollton and offered care and assistance to those who lived there, as well as managing the farm. After retirement, he worked on sale days at the Carrollton Auction Sales, refinished furniture and worked as a handyman all around Carrollton. He was a member of the Greene County Farm Bureau.

Visitation was from 1 p.m. Sunday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, until funeral services at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla officiating. Organist was Betty Carrico.

Casketbearers were Keith Rollins, David Williams, Larry Howard, Tom Koblitz, Dick Koblitz, and John Hunter. Burial was at Carrollton City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Blessing Hospice of Greene County or the Activities Department of Eunice Smith Nursing Home.


PERRY, JOHN R.

Gazette-Patriot, Carrollton, Ill., Thursday, March 3, 2005

Greene County native John R. Perry, 82, of St. Louis died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at DesPeres Hospital in St. Louis County.

He was born July 21,1922, in Carrollton, the son of Francis and Ruth Perry. He married Marjorie R. Borman, and she survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Jaclyn (husband Bill) Brizzard and Marilyn (husband John Jr.) Nicka; and a grandson, Bradley Porter Perry.

Preceding him in death was a sister, Kate Bobis.

A Carrollton High School graduate, Mr. Perry lived in St. Louis for 49 years. He was a retired engineer with the U.S. Army Aviations and Systems Command and served in the 386th Bomb Group during WWII.

A prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, at the Stygar Florissant Chapel, 13980 New Halls Ferry Road (at Lindberg). Private interment will be held at Carrollton City Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.


RIBBLE, EILEEN RAINWATER

Eileen Ribble, 83, formerly of Greene County, died at 12:01 a.m. Friday April 8, 2005, at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home in Jerseyville.

Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Carrollton, she was the daughter of Dink and Alice (Darr) Rainwater.

She married Charles Ribble on Oct. 28, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo. He died April 8, 1996.

Surviving are three daughters, Charlotta Wall and her husband, Richard, of Brighton, Kathy Kissner of Alton and Maeda Lewey of Godfrey; two sons and their wives, Don and Lisa Ribble of Carrollton and John and Doris Ribble of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren, Scott and his wife, Chris, Wall, Ron Wall, Randall and his wife, Mary, St. Peters, Joan and her husband John, Dougherty, Jessi Ribble, Mary Lewey and Matthew Lewey; and two great-grandchildren, Josh and Lindsey St. Peters.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronald Ribble; and a sister, Ada Angle.

Visitation will be from noon until a service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton.

Burial will be in the Carrollton City Cemetery.

ROBINSON, JERRY LEE

Jerry Lee Robinson, 49, died early Friday morning, April 22, 2005, at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.

He was born Dec. 19, 1955, in Carrollton to Burns "Dick" and Gertrude "Gertie" Stringer Robinson.

He was a horse trainer and raced horses through Robinson Stables in Carrollton, having been involved with horses for more than 30 years. He had worked several years at RECO in Roodhouse. His parents owned the Roller Rink in Carrollton, and he learned to skate before he was 2 years old. He enjoyed skating for many years and was an accomplished skater.

He is survived by his companion of 20 years, Shirley Ruyle of Carrollton; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Carol Robinson of Carrollton; two sisters, Sue Weinmann of Carrollton and Pat Frye-Warmbier of Champaign, Ill.; one niece; and six nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will meet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Carrollton City Cemetery.

SETTLES, HAZEL I. EVANS SNYDER

GREENFIELD Hazel I. Settles, 66, died at 9:10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at her residence. Born in Winchester on Oct. 24, 1938, she was the daughter of Joseph D. and Ethel L. Rider Evans. She first married Richard F. Snyder and they later divorced. She later married Ronald Settles on Feb. 26, 1998, and he survives.

She worked for the Illinois Department of Human Services for 32 years, retiring in 1997. She was a member of the Eldred Baptist Church and loved bowling and gardening. She loved spending time with her family. Her warmth and grace will be sadly missed. She was a "lady" in every sense of the word.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her father of Pittsfield; a daughter and her husband, Jeanne and Jeff Bone of Greenfield; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard D. Snyder and Mike and Denise Snyder, all of Carrollton; three stepsons and their wives, Ronnie and Jane Settles, Randy and Gina Settles and Roger and Mandy Settles, all of Carrollton; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Norma and Myron Rexroad of Greenfield and Ruth Ann and Luis Riveira of Orlando, Fla.; and a brother and his wife, Lloyd and Judy Evans of Winchester.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Burial will follow at the Carrollton City Cemetery.

WALKER, CHARLES K.

Charles K. Walker, 88, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at White Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in White Hall.

Born Oct. 10, 1916, in Rockbridge, he was the son of Phillip and Emma (Peters) Walker.

He married Marcelle Ward in 1938. She died Feb. 9, 1986.

A farmer, he also trained harness horses and got into the harness racing business as a hobby in the 1960s, leading all of his sons and grandsons to be involved in it also. One of his greatest days was when his homebred Go Count won the Aged Pace at the Illinois State Fair. He also loved card playing. He was a member of the Carrollton Methodist Church, the United States Trotting Association, Greene County Fair Board, the Methodist Men’s Club, Greene County Farm Bureau and the Odd Fellows. He will be sadly missed.

Surviving are a daughter, Pat Miner, and her husband, Steve, of Rockport; three sons, Larry Walker and his wife, Karen, Bob Walker and his wife, Marietta, and Tom Walker, all of Carrollton; eight grandchildren, Mark and Sean Walker, Geoff Driskill, Robyn Mullink, Tina Schrock, Hart Walker, Bobette Walker and Chas Walker; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Hillis of White Hall; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Walker of Jacksonville.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Brad and Dan Walker; two brothers, Leroy and Leonard Walker; and two sisters, Freda Stuart and Eileen Walker.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton, where funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Burial will follow at Carrollton City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Greene County Fair or the Carrollton United Methodist Church.

Former Carrollton resident Hugh T. Wayham, 89, of Bridgeton, Mo., died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.

He was born Jan. 21, 1915, near Carrollton, the son of Edgar and Maude (Owens) Wayham. He married the former Helen M. Brach March 30, 1940, in St. Louis, and she died Dec. 25, 2000.

Surviving are two brothers and a sister-in-law, Edgar "June" and Mary Ellen Wayham of Greenfield and Carroll Wayham of St. Louis; a sister, Athalone Claflin of Eldred; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Kenneth Wayham.

Mr. Wayham was an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers #1 in St. Louis.

Graveside rites were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carrollton City Cemetery in Carrollton.

Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Greene County or Believers Baptist Church near Carrollton.

Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton was in charge of arrangements.
