CARROLLTON Eunice B. Batty, 74, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.
Born in Carrollton July 2, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Ora L. and Ruth (Carter) Wheeler.
On May 20, 1948, she married Eugene A. Batty in Carrollton and he preceded her in death on March 12, 1973.
She loved Carrollton and served the public as county clerk for Greene County from 1980 to 1992. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Carrollton BPW, the National Organization of County Clerks, the Bridge Club, the Reisch/Boyd Auxiliary and was a league bowler both in Roodhouse and Jerseyville for many years. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Norm Stebbons of Ballwin, Mo., and Kathy and Joe Smith of Bloomfield, Mo.; two sons and their wives, Lee Roy and Debbie Batty of Plainfield, Ind., and David and Karen Batty of Godfrey; five grandchildren, a stepgrandchild, three great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Beckham of Carrollton; four nieces, seven nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, LeRoy and Melvin "Zeke" Wheeler; an infant grandson, James M. Shoemaker; and a nephew, Carter Wheeler.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton.
Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery south of Carrollton.

He was born April 1, 1921, in Carrollton, the son of Harry "Hap" Carter and Pauline Overby Carter of Carrollton. He married Doris Hoots of Eldred in 1945, and she survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Susanne Badilla of Alaska and Sharon Riefler of Illinois; four grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley Marshall of Illinois, Barbara Johns of Maryland and Betsy Blount of Florida; four nephews; and a niece.
Mr. Carter graduated from Carrollton High School in 1939, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949 and Master of Arts degree in 1954 from George Washington University. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran and U.S. Merchant Marine, he was employed by the Diplomatic Corps of the United States Information Agency for 28 years, serving in Monterrey, Mex., Mexico City, Mex., Lima, Peru and Washington, D.C. He went on to work for the city of Dallas, Tex. as Chief of Protocol and later for city of Springfield as Coordinator for International Affairs, Office of the Mayor. He helped establish the World Affairs Council, spearheaded Sister Cities of Springfield, and served on the Board of the Springfield Community Concert Association.
Burial was at Carter Cemetery in Carrollton. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home of Carrollton will entomb the remains.

Miss Mabel Gano, 97, of Carrollton died at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
She was born Sept. 11, 1907, near Carrollton, the daughter of Avery W. and Dorothy M. (Berry) Gano.
She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Albert Kallal of Carrollton; a nephew, A.W. (wife Glenda) Gano of Calif.; seven great-nephews, Steven Kruslak of Bangor, Mich., Michael Kruslak of Chicago, Ryan and Jason Gano of Calif., Richard Burns, and David and Zak Goodyear; a great-niece, Debra Benshoter of Adrian, Mich.; a cousin, Elsie Bans of Little Rock, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews on the Kallal side.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Dr. Avison Gano and Berry Gano; and a niece, Marian Riley.
Miss Gano spent her entire life in rural Carrollton on the Gano Farm. She was a custom seamstress for 40 years. She was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville.
Graveside rites were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Carter Cemetery near Carrollton with Father William Hembrow officiating.

Graveside services for Miss Mabel Gano, 97, of Carrollton, were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Carter Cemetery in Carrollton with the Rev. William Hembrow officiating.
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton was in charge of arrangements.
Vesta H. Iden, 86, died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 1995, at Reisch Memorial Nursing Home in Carrollton.
Born near Carrollton Sept. 13, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Harry L. and Grace (Dan) Carter.
She married Herman Iden in Carrollton Dec. 31, 1955. He died Nov. 21, 1960.
Surviving are a sister, Rua Winters of Carrollton; a brother, Don Carter of Carrollton; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were a sister, Mary Carter; five brothers, David, Delbert, Ted, Walter and Harry Carter; a half sister, Nellie Hoff; and a half brother, Sam Carter.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 1995, at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton with the Rev. Terry Turner officiating. Organist was Diane Wolfley. Pallbearers were Bob Graner, Bob Hoff, Kenny Stringer, James Laverne Winters, Paul Wayne Winters and David Carter. Burial was at Carter Cemetery.

PADUCAH, Ky.
Beth E. Moss, 44, died at 7:40 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2002.
Born Nov. 5, 1957, in St. Louis, she was a daughter of Wayne Smelser of St. Charles, Mo., and Marion K. Carter Twigg of Roxana. A stepfather, Jerry Murphy, preceded her in death.
A homemaker, she married Allan E. Moss June 8, 1988, in West Alton, Mo. He survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Trina L., Terin E. and Mallory K. Mills, all of Paducah, Ky.; two stepdaughters, Stacy and Sarah Moss, both of Las Vegas; three sons, Trevor L., Ian D. and Devin S. Mills, all of Paducah; a grandchild, Toby Ramage; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Tammy L. and Rick Holland of Lake Elsinor, Calif., and Kacey and Bryan Cress of Brighton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Shawn and Becky Murphy of Brea, Calif., and Gavin Murphy of Pontoon Beach; a grandmother, Elizabeth Carter of Roxana; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews.
In addition to her stepfather, she was preceded in death by a grandfather, Harry Carter.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton, then continues Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at 10:30 a.m. at United Presbyterian Church in Wood River, with the Rev. Lana Zakrzewski officiating.
Burial will be at Carter Cemetery in Carrollton.

CARROLLTON Helen D. Rhoades, 90, died at 3:43 a.m. Sunday, March 7, 2004, at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.
She was born Feb. 5, 1914, near Carrollton, to William and May (Henkel) Frech.
In 1931, she married Charles Alvin Rhoades. He died April 3, 1965.
She was a member of the Baptist faith and will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Rhoades of Springfield and Don "Muzz" and Donna Rhoades of Carrollton; a granddaughter, Megan Rhoades; and two great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Dilan Rhoades, all of Las Vegas.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles William Rhoades; two sisters, Catherine Richards and Margaret "Pat" Raftis; and three brothers, Paul, Jake and Gerald Frech.
Visitation will be from noon until time of services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton.
Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery, south of Carrollton.

JERSEYVILLE
John David Short, 65, died at 6:10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at his home after a battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 19, 1937, in Potosi, Mo., to Leoria J. (Gilman) Short of Jerseyville and Louie Edgar Short.
He attended Jersey Community High School and worked at several occupations including with his father at a sawmill, farming and Beall Tool and Die in East Alton for nine years before starting his own painting company, S&J Painting, with his wife. They worked together for the past 30 years before declining health set in.
He married the former Shirley Hardwick on Sept. 26, 1971, at the home of her parents in Carrollton. She survives.
Also surviving are six children and their spouses, John David Short Jr. of Greenfield, Ronald Michael and Kelly Short of Brighton, Christopher and Shawnee Short of Mount Vernon, Wash., Jennifer and George Koranyi of Fort Carson, Colo., Penny Everts of Jerseyville and Jessica and Michael Stromske of Grafton; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Edgar Short of Jerseyville, Gary Short of Godfrey and Greg Short of Jerseyville; and two sisters, Mary Hayes of Fredericktown, Mo., and Naomi Foolri of Vancouver, Wash.
Preceding him in death were an infant brother, James, and a daughter-in-law, Tammie Short.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Crawford Funeral Home (Jacoby Chapel) in Jerseyville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene in Jerseyville, with the Rev. Chris Horton officiating.
Burial will be at Carter Cemetery, south of Carrollton.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the family.

FIDELITY
William Allen Wells, 69, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville.
Born Aug. 16, 1932, in Eldred, he was a son of the late John W. and Eunice E. (Withrow) Wells.
He married the former Bonnie L. Day Dec. 26, 1967, in Jerseyville. She survives.
A U.S. Army veteran, serving two tours of duty during the Korean War, he was a handyman in the area for many years.
Also surviving are two sons, Arthur Wells of Bloomington and John H.P. Wells of Fidelity; a daughter, Rebecca J.L. Wells of Worden; a granddaughter, Meghan Vittitow; a brother, Jesse Singleton of Jerseyville; and four sisters, Janet Tighe of Delrio, Texas, Joyce Lueker of Jerseyville, Sadie Butler of California and Corey Singleton.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter in 2001, Annie L. Wells; an infant son, William Allen Wells Jr.; three brothers, Charles Wells, Elmer Singleton and Robert Singleton; four sisters, Karen Fender, Marjorie Strickland, Millie Singleton and Virginia Grizzle; his stepmother, Lucy Wells; and his stepfather, Jesse Singleton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
Burial will follow at Carter Cemetery in Carrollton. Full military rites will be conducted by the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 and VFW Post 4528.
Memorials may be made to the family in care of the funeral home.
