EBENEZER aka MARTIN'S PRAIRIE CEMETERY

ELISHA SPENCER

Much information is available about Elisha Spencer, much of it conflicting. Although his tombstone shows him to be aged 100 years, it is true that he was careless with what age he gave at any given time. On Aug. 9, 1877 he said in a statement that he was 91 years of age. A lengthy search has failed to show the names of his parents. He married Nancy Hupp in Aug of 1811 in Harrison Co., IN. In 1910 they moved to Lawrence Co., IL and in 1826 to Greene Co. In 1855 he married Mrs. Margaret (Morton) Depew at Athensville. In a sworn statement in 1871 he claimed her name was Margaret Redman, but in 1877 he swore her name was Margaret Depew. His sworn statements are in his government files. He made claims for a pension for serving in Spencer's company at the Battle of Tippacanoe, IN. However the pension was rejected as Elisha's name didn't appear on the muster rolls of the company. He also swore that he served in Capt. Thomas Berry's company in the War of 1812 and was honorably discharged in June of 1811 as second bugler, but his name wasn't on the muster rolls of that company either. Elisha was a member of the Baptist Church for the last 20 years of his life. For information about this man check the index files at the White Hall Library, write to the National Archives Records Service in Washington, DC and ask for hsi pension records, and refer to page 978 of "History of Jersey and Greene Counties, Illinois, 1855."
