Henderson Cemetery
White Hall TownshipGreene County, Illinois
This abandoned cemetery is located in the Southwest Quarter of Section 12, Range 12, Township 11, 3rd PM. The cemetery has been known, at various times, by the name Stout Cemetery.
Beginning at Tunison and Main Street (1150E) at the south edge of White Hall, Greene Co., IL, then 4/10 mile South on Main Street to a blacktop road (2150N) and turn East (left) for 8/10 mile, then turn South (right) on 1225E for 1 and 2/10 miles to a property line (no fence, but cropline shows), then 750 feet East (left) to a woods on private property. The cemetery is fenced and overgrown with trees, poison ivy and itchweed.
Update: Terry Barnard, his wife Linda and I spent several weekends in October 2010, cutting brush (Terry did the hard work of cutting the brush and Linda and I dragged it into piles for burning) and cleaning this abandoned cemetery. Terry will burn the brush during the winter and then spray the cemetery in the spring. It actually looks like a cemetery again, rather than a brush patch. Terry also made a new sign, positioned more correctly, for the road and moved the original sign to the outside of the fenced cemetery which is situated 700 ft. off the road. We took photographs of the stones which are standing in the cemetery. There are also quite a few field stones which mark unknown graves in the cemetery.
