Another Patriot Passes Away.
William D. Phibbs was born in Knox County, Tennessee, October 29, 1834. He came to Greene County, Illinois, in 1866, and resided in Carrollton for a short time. Since then he has lived at Providence and Hickory Grove, but during the last several years at Greenfield, Ill. Mr. Phibbs was a soldier for the Union, entering the service November 15, 1862, when in his State it was hazardous to express any sympathy with the North. He was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tenn., July 6, 1865. During the winter of 1883 he was converted at Providence Church. He died Sunday evening April 24, peacefully, and in hope of rest, in his 64th year.
He has been a hard laborer, a generous hearted man, kind and affectionate in his family, loving peace and harmony with his fellow men. He was patient and courageous under misfortunes. He leaves a wife and five children.
His remains were taken on Tuesday to Hickory Grove Cemetery for interment, Rev. Jacobs conducting the services at the church and the comrades of the Grand Army of which Mr. Phibbs was a respected member, had charge of the service at the grave.
