Short Cemetery
Mt. Gilead, Hutchens, and Donegan Cemetery
From the Gazette-Patriot, Carrollton, IL, Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002 - from an article dealing with Greene County Days.
This well maintained cemetery is located about one-half mile down a field road in Section 7 of Rubison township. At one time a small community with a store and school were located nearby. The first burial was a child of a Short family in 1834. Thomas Jefferson Short was one of the first settlers in the area and donated the land for the cemetery. At least two victims of a 1927 killer tornado are buried in this cemetery.

From the North: Begin where IL Route 267 crosses Interstate 72 at the south edge of Jacksonville, Morgan Co., IL, then
south on 267 for 19.0 miles to the Palmyra Road (2100N) and then turn right (west) for 1.7 miles to a crossroads. Turn left (south) on (2000E) for .5 mile to a road between
two fields and then turn right (west) for .4 mile ending at Short Cemetery. This field road was once graveled and is ok in dry weather.
From the South: Begin at the Junction of IL Route 267 and the Wrights road (1600N) in Greenfield, Greene Co., IL, then north on 267 for 5.0 miles to the Palmyra Road (2100N) and then turn left
(west) for 1.7 miles to a crossroads. Turn left (south) on (2000E) for .5 mile to a road between two fields and then turn right (west) for .4 mile ending at Short cemetery. This field road was once graveled and is ok in dry weather.
Don and Terry completed re-reading & taking photos of the stones in this cemetery on 26 Sept 2012. The cemetery is 208 square feet and well fenced on all four sides.
