ASBURY CEMETERY
Brighton, Macoupin County, Illinois

History of Asbury Cemetery, written by Charlotte Roady in 1973: "Asbury Cemetery is one of the area's oldest cemeteries and lies north of Brighton and west of U.S. Rte. 67, near the Warren Ingram residence, just a short distance off the Gun Club Rd. Founded by a Methodist circuit rider, Alex Miles, the cemetery was deeded in 1852, but the story behind it goes back many years before that.

Having decided to settle in this area, Miles bought several hundred acres and built a log cabin for his family. Many of his relatives followed and made their home here. When a death in the family occurred, Miles buried the deceased on a hillside on his land. In 1852, Miles made a deed of an acre of ground including the hillside to be used as a final resting place for his friends and relatives forever to be called Asbury. The deed was four pages long and deeded to the Macoupin County judges and commissioners. The land area was measured by the use of links and chains. Following the deeding the land around the cemetery was ringed by a hedge fence and cedar trees were scattered within the cemetery itself.

As the years passed, the cemetery became well known for the number of war veterans that were buried here. War veterans from the War of 1812, Black Hawk War, Civil, Spanish American and World War I rest in Asbury Cemetery. So many wars were represented that the members of the Brighton GAR put up a munument listing the names of war veterans and the wars in which they fought. Although some of the stones have fallen, many are still readable and are for men who came from as far east as New Hampshire.

Today, many of the original cedar trees at the cemetery are gone, but the hedge still surrounds it and the cemetery is kept up quite well. Visitors are welcome to view what is one of area's oldest and best preserved cemeteries."
