DENBY CEMETERY
Macoupin County, Illinois
Denby Cemetery is located in Section 26, Macoupin County, Illinois and is situated quite some distance from the road. You can drive part way through fields in good weather, then you need to walk through timbered areas. The cemetery is fenced and covers approximately one acre.
Update: One of the original Denby descendants led us to this cemetery on 8 June 2006 - to say that it is difficult to locate is a vast understatement. Although you can drive part way to the cemetery (it must be when there has not been rain) you must still walk a distance through thick timber and brush to reach the cemetery. There is a path which clearly leads you to the cemetery. This is a cemetery which we will need to revisit during cold weather after the grass and weeds have died down as it is almost impossible to find all of the stones because of the tall grass in the cemetery. According to our guide, the Denby family originally settled this area in about 1835. The church which originally set in the middle of the cemetery was moved in approximately 1899 when it was thought that a railroad (from Carlinville to Jacksonville) was coming through the area. As it turned out, the railroad was never built. Although we took a few photos while we were in the cemetery, the heavy timber and deep shade made picture taking difficult. Denby Cem. is on our list of cemeteries to revisit when the weather is colder.
