LANDRETH CEMETERY
Macoupin County, Illinois

Landreth Cemetery is located 2 1/2 miles north and 2 1/4 miles west of
Modesto, Illinois in Macoupin County, Illinois. In 1876, Jonathan Landreth deeded
one acre to trustees and the county of Macoupin for a burial ground. This cemetery
has no fence around it and livestock have grazed around and over it. All of the stones
are fallen. The oldest stone recorded by the WPA in the 1930's was that of
Martha J. Collins, wife of Isaac Collins, who died 11 Sep 1874. More recent readings
have not located her stone. Sherry Austin and Shirley Ashbaugh visited this cemetery on April 9, 2005 -
all of the stones are down and the brush, grass and weeds were high enough that there may have been other
stones down which they didn't discover.
Sherry and Earl revisited this cemetery during the latter
part of April, 2007 and took photographs of the only remaining stones which can be located in this cemetery. If a
name appears in
red, click on the name to bring up the photograph of that individual's marker.
Note:
Earl believes that the inscription for Mary Thompson Landreth, wife of Jonathan may be on the opposite of the
spire for her husband, unfortunately at some point of time in the past, someone poured concrete around
this spire where it lay and it is impossible to turn it over to see if there is additional information.
