PEEBLES CEMETERY
Macoupin County, Illinois
Location: As you come into Chesterfield on Rte. 111, turn right on the first street in what would be downtown (or the square) Chesterfield. Drive to the end of the block and turn right at the Funeral home with sits on the corner. Follow the street to the end, just before it curves left (to the west) - Peebles Cemetery is tucked into a corner, right beside the street. Although the cemetery is mowed several times a year, the stones are in terrible condition with most of them down and some of them nearly covered with grass and dirt. There were also several stones which were so broken up and buried that we were unable to get any transcription from them. Two of these stones are right at the front, to the right of the gate and underneath the wooden fence which runs along the front of the cemetery.
Note: While locating and taking photos of the stones in the cemetery (June 2006), I missed taking several photographs. After uncovering the stones for Bird & Nancy Peebles, I decided to wait for the mud to dry before taking photographs - unfortunately I forgot to go back and get those two photographs. The same thing happened with at least one other stone - I'll get back to the cemetery during the next couple of weeks and take photographs of the stones I missed. There were several names which appeared in a list prepared by the Macoupin County Historical Society 20 or 25 years ago which I did not locate during this latest reading trip - if there were originally stones in the cemetery we didn't find them or perhaps the names were picked up from another source.
