J. W. NEWCOMER, physician, Petersburg; son of Joseph and Maria (Royer) Newcomer; was born in Chester Co., Penn., Sept. 17, 1838, where he was raised and received his academical education; after which he entered Jefferson Medical College, of Philadelphia, graduating in 1864. He then entered the regular service as a medical officer of the Navy Department. After a service of eighteen months, he resigned and spent some time in looking for a location. Being favorable impressed with Petersburg, and its people, he located here in 1866. His uprightness of character gave the people confidence, and his gradual increase of practice is evidence of his skill. He is a member of the State Medical Association, and President of the Tri-State Society (District of Brainard). He married Miss E. Jennie, daughter of Isaac White, a pioneer of this county, Dec. 5, 1867; they have a family of six.
