SCHOENEWEISS-GERMAN-SANDRIDGE CEMETERY

19N 7W Section 11
Menard County, Illinois

This transcription is a compilation of sources, including the tombstone inscriptions made by Mr. James Toal in 1984; tombstone inscriptions completed by Eileen Gochanour in 1955, funeral home records, family histories, and obituaries in possession of Eileen Gochanour and a re-reading of this cemetery by Jeanie Lowe & crew. Our thanks to Eileen and Mr. Toal for permission to make this data available on our web page and to Jeanie and her crew for the hours spent checking previous information and taking photos of the stones they were able to find.

According to the D.A.R. records in the Illinois State Historical Library, this cemetery was named after this family. The twins being the first burials here. This cemetery is ten miles north of Petersburg, Illinois. This information was taken from an old Bible of Henry Schonewise of Clay Center, Kansas.

As these transcriptions were done by humans, they are subject to errors. One should research the original documents/read the headstones, to verify the correctness.

Our thanks to Jeanie Lowe for the dozens of pictures she has taken in the Menard County Cemeteries and for sharing her work with us.

Road leading to Schoeneweiss Cemetery                   "Lane leading up to Cemetery

The first picture is the road which the cemetery lane leads off from. The cemetery lane is to the right just before the telephone pole. The second picture is of the lane leading up to the cemetery. There is no sign for the cemetery but the cemetery itself is well maintained and very charming."

Directions: Follow Rte. 97 North through Petersburg to North Petersburg Road, which is marked, and also you will notice the Menard County Fairgrounds sign. Turn right on to North Petersburg Road and follow it for 6.1 miles to where the road curves sharply to the left (do not curve to the left). Go straight off of it for 1 mile to where the road makes a sharp curve to the right. Stay on that road and follow the curve to the right for about 0.5 miles to a lane where the cemetery is located. The lane is not marked. It is on the right side of the road, just before a road which goes to the right. It has some gravel on it but you have to look for it. If you go across a little bridge after you have gone the half a mile after the curve, you have gone too far. This is a tricky cemetery to locate. It is on German Cemetery Road, but there isn't always a sign marking the road. Hopefully the pictures will help in your efforts to locate this cemetery.
