Died: August 7, 1848 at Athens, Illinois Sangamon (now Menard) County, Illinois.
Buried: West Cemetery at Athens, Illinois.
Married: Nancy Jane Dabney on November 3, 1785. She was born July 8, 1760. She died December 24, 1820.
John Overstreet's grave was marked by Pierre Menard Chapter DAR, Petersburg, Illinois.
He enlisted in the 1st Virginia Regiment, also the 14th Virginia Regiment and the 1st and 10th Virginia Regiment when he was 15 years of age, for one year. He served as a private in Captain Campbell's Company and Col. Lewis' 8th Regiment of the State of Virginia. Discharged in September 1776. Reenlisted January 1, 1777. Served as a private in Captain George Lambert's Company. Was in the battle of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth and Stony Point. Discharged in 1780. Volunteered and served in the siege of Yorktown until after the surrender of Cornwallis. Reenlisted as a private in 1781. Applied for pension on June 16, 1818 while living at Lawrence County, Ohio. Gave his age at that time as 58 years.
