Berkey (perhaps misspelled) was situated on the southwest corner of North Church and West Walnut streets in Jacksonville. Walter Vernon Opperman, who lived in the neighborhood as a child and young man, remembers playing amongst the tombstones. When the house at 987 North Church was built, it is reported that a coffin was found while digging the basement. Duirng the late 1950s and until about 1972 the site of the cemetery was a tangle of brush around what appeared to be a brick foundation. About 1972 the area was bulldozed and is, in 1974, a flat, grassy, empty lot, with many remnants of broken stones and concrete scattered about.
