Francis Eugene "Gene" Cully, 77, of rural Jacksonville, died Friday morning, Aug. 6, 1999 at his residence.

He was born July 6, 1922 near Jacksonville, the son of John A. and Annella Hembrough Cully. He married Ruth E. Fitzsimmons on June 3, 1945 at the Asbury United Methodist Church, and she survives.

He is also survived by one daughter, Beverly Jean (husband, Larry) Robinson of rural Jacksonville; one son, Gary (wife, Terry) of rural Jacksonville; eight grandchildren; one great grandson; two brothers, Earl A. and Donald Lee, both of rural Jacksonville; and one half-sister, Ellen Honey of Canada. He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Eugene, at birth; and three half-brothers, Jim, Art and Wibur.

Mr. Cully farmed in the Pisgah area his entire life. He served in the U.S. Army Radar Division during World War II. He was a faithful lifetime member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, where he was a lay leader, treasurer, chairman of the board and a member of the United Methodist Men's Club. He served on the board of directors of the Pisgah Elevator for nearly 20 years and was a member of the Farm Bureau.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, where his remains will lie in state one hour prior to services. Burial will be at the Ebenezer Cemetery, north of Jacksonville. The family will meet with friends 2-7 p.m. sunday at the Williamson Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Asbury United Methodist Church.
