HARTLAND CEMETERY
also called
HARTS PRAIRIE CEMETERY

Located on Hart's Prairie on the southern edge of Morgan County, the legal description of this burial ground is in Section 34 of Township 13N Range 9W. The cemetery is slightly more than one-half mile north of the Morgan and Macoupin County line, and is nearly a half-mile south of the Hart's Prairie Missionary Baptist Church. The new church building was formally dedicated on Sunday, Jan. 9, 1881, with Elder W.P. (Billy) Hart preaching the dedicatory sermon to an overflow crowd. When approaching the church from the west on the Nortonville-Waverly road (also known as State Aid Road 18 and road 100N) it is possible to see the taller tombstones in the cemetery unless the crops are too high. When walking to the cemetery either from the church, or east from the road known both as State Aid Road 9 and as Road 2676E, it is necessary to unwire and go through a gate from the field and then up a hill to another gate which must be unwired to get into the cemetery itself.

The cemetery was cleared of all brush sometime during the mid 1970s and was at one time kept mowed. However during our picture taking visit on October 28, 2001, it appeared that the cemetery is no longer being mowed as the grass was quite high, making it difficult to find the lower flat and toppled stones until you are right on top of them. Although there are several toppled stones (one or two which are quite large) - generally speaking the stones here are in good shape - particularly when you consider their age. There is quite a lot of what appears to be empty space on the south side of the cemetery - from front to back, which leads me to believe that there may be many more unmarked graves in this rural cemetery.
