SOOY CEMETERY
SW1/4 NE1/4, Section 11, Twp. 13N, Range 10W
About midway between Murrayville and Rees Station is Sooy Cemetery. Not visible from the road, three acres are deeded as cemetery land but only a small portion is used for this purpose. Sooy Cemetery has been fenced and maintained in the past. Situated on high ground, the cemetery overlooks a deep embankment and creek on the east side.
Earl & I visited this cemetery on Saturday, March 18, 2006 which was less than a week after the severe storms and tornado struck Morgan County on the previous Sunday. The land owner on whose property this cemetery is located suffered terrible damage - most of his home, buildings, sheds, etc. were totally destroyed. As you can see from the above photographs, many of the stately old trees in this cemetery were split and fell during the storm. I feel certain there were other stones in this cemetery which we couldn't see or reach because of the downed limbs and trees. Perhaps later in the year when there has been time to clean up the trees and limbs I can revisit this cemetery to locate other stones which I feel certain are here.
