"This photo was taken from a 1937 newspaper and is the only one we have of my uncle, William Thomas "Tom" Martin. Uncle Tom was born in Petersburg, Illinois on August 5, 1873 to John and Rachel (Kinney) Martin. He is the oldest of 6 children and, after the death of his mother in 1884, he and his 2 younger brothers were sent to Normal Illinois to an orpanage established for the children of Civil War veterans. His father was still living but unable to care for his young sons. Tom rejoined his father in Petersburg during the year 1887 and eventually settled in Oakland, Iowa where he farmed for the remainder of his life. He took time off from farming to join the army at age 44 and subsequently served in WWI. He died on 9 December 1944 and is buried in Iowa"
