Ellen "Ella" Mary Devine was born to Irish immigrants, Patrick and Bridget Daly Devine on September 23, 1872 in Pisgah, Morgan County, Illinois. She attended school and worked in Jacksonville until her marriage. Ella married Daniel Henry Kinney, son of John and Isabella McKillip Kinney on April 11, 1899 in Jacksonville, Illinois. They settled on their farm in Virginia, Cass Co., Illinois and their daughter, Marguerite Isabelle Kinney was born there in 1900. In 1901, the family moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where their son, Lawrence Devine Kinney, was born in 1903. After farming there for four years, they moved to Alexandria, Hanson, South Dakota where they were lifelong well known farmers. Dan Kinney passed away in 1935. Ella Devine Kinney passed away on July 3, 1961 in Alexandria and is interred near her husband in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria, South Dakota.
