Calvary Cemetery is well maintained by the Calvary Cemetery Board of Visitation B.V.M. Church in Illiopolis, St. Ann's Church in Niantic (Macon County) and descendants of people buried here. In photo above the older part of the cemetery is well in the back and new burials are filling the front by the entrance. Many people traveling Interstate 72 comment on the beauty of this cemetery. Ed Leonard is current President of the Cemetery Board.
Calvary Cemetery is located on the frontage road south of Interstate 72. To access, go south on Mechanicsburg blacktop road from Illiopolis or at Exit 122 from Interstate 72. After going over the overhead from Illiopolis or Exit from 122 south, turn left (east) on the frontage road and go not quite one mile. There is an Entrance ramp to I72 East before the frontage road so can be confusing. You will see a sign pointing East to Calvary Cemetery.
Information herein was obtained from onsite tombstone readings, photographs, cemetery and funeral home records as well as my personal knowledge and relationship to some of the families. Publications of this cemetery were made by the Decatur Area Genealogical Society and later the Sangamon County Genealogical Society, both of whom have the publication for sale. My readings were compared with these previous readings in order to verify, compare and correct. Due to the age of some of the stones, it is sometimes difficult to get a correct reading or photograph.
As with all transcribed records, errors could be made and one should document with other sources.
