JOHN SHARTZER, 71, DIES IN ACCIDENT
A rural Illiopolis man was killed and a relative seriously injured about 4 p.m. Friday when a car and a pickup truck collided head on the Mount Auburn Blacktop, about one mile north of Mount Auburn.
The driver of the pickup, John Shartzer, 71, was dead on arrival at Taylorville's St. Vincent's Hospital. The other driver was Harold "Bucko" Saulsberry, 23, of Mount Auburn. He was critically injured and was taken to St. John's HOspital. He reportedly had a spleen injury, a broken elbow and other injuries. He was improving this week.Cause of the crash is unknown. It is believed Shartzer was northbound in his pickup truck and Saulsberry was traveling south. Both vehicles were spun around to the opposite directions after they hit.
JOHN F. SHARTZERHe was born in Illiopolis the son of John Frederick and Harriet Saulsbery Shartzer. Mr. Shartzer was a retired farmer and a Army veteran of World War II. In 1948, he married Doris Stokes in Illiopolis.
Surviving are his wife, Doris; four daughters, Mrs. Darrell (Betty Ann) Gift, Mrs. Roy (Patsy) Hamm, both of Mt. Auburn, Mrs. Matt (Dottie) Meier and Miss Jayni Shartzer, both of Illiopolis; three sisters, Mrs. Bessie Everman, Mrs. Nellie Crist, both of Niantic and Mrs. Elmer (Harriet) Barringer of Iliopolis; two brothers, Eddie and Arthur, both of Illiopolis.Services at 2 p.m Tuesday at Dawson-Wikoff Funeral Home, Illiopolis, with the Rev. Victor Gross officiating. Burial in Riverside Cemetery.
