FREDERICK BERKENMAYER was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, September 19th, 1826. At the age of five years he emigrated with his father to Louisville, Kentucky, where they remained but a short time, as they soon left for Harrison county, Indiana. For the following three years they were engaged i8n farming in that county, after which they returned to Kentucky, where they engaged in gardening, near the city of Louisville, about two years. They them emigrated to that part of Morgan county, Illinois which is now Scott county. Mr. B. continued to work on the farm. He was married in 1849 to Miss Catherine WEISER, a native of Germany. They had seven children, one dying in infancy, the remainder are living at home. Mrs. BERKENMAYER died March 26, 1865. Mr. BERKENMAYER was afterwards married to Mrs. Gretta SHELTON, a native of Ireland. She came to the Untied States when a mere girl, and lived in Rome, New York, several years, and then came to Illinois. They have had two children, one son and one daughter. Mr. B. is a self-made man, who began life without money, but being possessed of the qualities necessary to succeed in life he has been enabled to acquire a fine fortune. He has one of the best grain farms in the county, containing five hundred and twenty acres, with all the modern improvements, besides being stocked with the best class of horses and cattle. A fine view of the place is shown in another part of this work. The following are the names of his children by his first wife: John Frederick, born January 23, 1851; Estamonia, born January 6, 1853; Theoria, September, 21, 1856; Heneretta, February 6, 1858; Frederick M., May 8, 1860; George, July 8, 1862; Fannie, March 6, 1864. By his present wife he has two, Jessie May, a sweet little girl, born November 29, 1869, and John Franklin, born on the 22d of September, 1872. Mr. B. has never asked for an office of any kind, as he preferred the more quiet life of a farmer to that of politician. He has ever been a staunch supporter of the union, and has always been found in the ranks of the democratic party, which always received his most cordial support. His father was also a supporter of the same party. Mr. B. is respected by a wide circle of friends who appreciate his many good qualities, and also those of his amiable wife.
