JOHN W. GREEN , the subject of this sketch, was born on the 7th of January, 1834, in Morgan county, Illinois (now Scott). His father, BENJAMIN GREEN, emigrated from Yorkshire, England, and settled in Scott county in 1829. Mr. G. was raised on a farm, and only received a very limited education, owing to the fact that schools, in the early days of his life, were very limited, and only kept a few months during the year. At the age of twenty-one he began farming for himself on his father's farm, and on the 29th of October, 1834, he was married to Miss MARGARET JANE OHLER, daughter of GEORGE and MARGARET OHLER, natives of Mount Joy township, Adams county, Pa. She emigrated with her mother, in 1851, and settled in Scott county. He began life in Oxville precinct on section 31, where he has one of the most productive grain and stock farms in Scott county. A view of this elegant house and its surroundings can be seen elsewhere in this map. His farm consists of six hundred and eighty acres of land. They have had eight children, four sons and four daughters, six of whom are now living, and are as follows: MARGARET H., ANN E., BENJAMIN F., WILLIAM H., JOHN WESLEY, and CARRIE M., all of whom reside at home.

Mr. GREEN is one of the most extensive stock dealers in the county, and one of the most successful farmers. He is, politically, a republican, and during the late war a firm friend of the Union. He gave liberally of his means to prosecute the war to a successful close. He is noted for his generosity and kindness, and to the more unfortunate of his fellow-men his "latch-string is always out," and it is his great desire to make those around him enjoy themselves. He and his wife are both members of the M. E. Church, and have been for over twenty years.
