D. SKILLING, M. D., was born in Wayne county, Ohio, August 4, 1822. His father, Hugh Skilling, was a native of Pennsylvania, and emigrated to Ohio in an early day. The Doctor attended the common schools of his county until he was seventeen years of age, when his father sent him to the Ohio University, located at Athens, Ohio, where he remained for three years. He then attended the Medical College of Kentucky, at Louisville, where he graduated in 1848. The Doctor then emigrated west, and located in Athens, Pike county, Ill., where he practiced his profession until 1853, when he concluded to remove to Winchester, and in the same year located at that place, where he continued a successful practice until 1867, when he was elected president of the First National Bank, which is one of the most successful banking houses in Illinois, and of which he is president at this time. The bank was organized by Dr. Skilling and Judge Moses in 1865. The capital of the bank was $50,000, and its surplus is now over $20,000. the best evidence of the confidence the people have of its management is the fact that the deposits have averaged about $100,000. Prior to his connection with the bank, he was one of the leading physicians of the town of Winchester, and enjoyed a large practice. No man stands higher in the scale of morality, integrity, etc., than does the Doctor. he is a man who takes great pleasure in the society of his family. he has one son and one daughter.
