FRED H. ALLEN

Twelve years ago Fred H. Allen came to Winchester and became resident manager of the lumber firm of Hunter, Allen & Co. The years of his residence among Scott county people have abundantly proven his ability as a business man, and his true worth as a gentleman. Fred H. Allen was born near Bradford, Bureau county, Illinois, September 11, 1857. When he was five years of age his parents moved to a farm near Tiskilwa, in the same county, and there he grew to manhood and lived until he was thirty-four years of age. In the schools of Bureau county he was educated, and from his contact with men and matters he acquired the business training which has fitted him for a life of usefulness and activity.

In 1891 he formed a partnership with Hiram Hunter of Henry, and his son, Elmer Hunter of Chillicothe, under the firm name of Hunter, Allen & Co., came to Winchester and purchased the lumber business of S. W. Puffer, and Mr. Allen has since resided in Scott county and managed that ever increasing business.

October 15, 1879, Mr. Allen was married to Miss Ida McDole of Rock Island, Illinois, and the union of effort, of thought and of heart has proven very pleasant. To Mr. and Mrs. Allen two children have been born - a daughter, Mattie Alma, now married to Elmer McCullough, and residing near Riggston; a son, Harry Howe, now at home, and will graduate from the Winchester high school with class of 1903.

In addition to the lumber business the firm also farms upon quite an extensive scale. They own 2040 acres of fine land in the river bottoms, and it is all embraced within the new drainage district.

The Allen family are members of the Methodist church. Mr. Allen is a republican and a member of the Masonic fraternity. He has never taken a very active interest in politics and with the exception as mayor of Winchester, has never accepted office of any sort. In every walk in life he has discharged his whole duty and can be depended upon under the most trying and adverse circumstances.
