H. H. BROCKHOUSE

It is a noticeable fact that wherever German communities exist there is thrift. Their industry is proverbial and they form a safe, solid, conservative element in any locality. Of such lineage comes the subject of this sketch, H. H. Brockhouse, who was born in Exeter precinct, Scott county, Illinois, March 3, 1849. His father, Detrick Brockhouse and his mother, Mary Brockhouse, were born in Germany, came to this country in 1839 and settled in Morgan county, and in 1848 moved to Scott county and purchased the farm upon which Mr. Brockhouse was born. He was educated in that community and the years of his life have been spent there. On April 17, 1887, he was married to Miss Sophia Teameier. Three children have been born to them; two, Fred and Henrietta, are still living.

Mr. Brockhouse owns 263 acres of splendid land, all in Exeter precinct, and he is today a living example of what Teutonic grit and pertenacity will do for a man in this land of wonderful possibility. He has always been a democrat, taking a lively interest in party affairs and has been a school director in Pin Oak district for many years. He is one of the substantial farmers of the county, throughly understands his business and in the little better than a half-century of life has surrounded himself with the comforts and luxuries which will tend to the happiness of his latter days. True to the habits formed in early life he has lived, respected among men, honest in his dealings, fair and impartial in his judgment, careful and considerate of the wishes and opinions of others, and is today a power for good in Exeter precinct and has done much, very much, for its upbuilding and advancement.

The least that can be said of H. H. Brockhouse is that he is a good citizen.
