Jackson Canatsey, the subject of this sketch, was born five miles east of Winchester, Ill., Feb. 17, 1848. He was brought up on a farm and has always lived on one, hence his education is limited, consisting only of a country school training, which was obtained at Harts. His father, George Canatsey, was one of the old settlers of Scott county.
While young, Mr. Canatsey worked for his father, but when he became of age he rented land and set to work for himself. In a few years he purchased a small farm of sixty acres, on which he erected a frame dwelling. At the age of twenty-seven he went to Kentucky on a visit, and there met his future wife, Miss Mary Catherine Powell, to whom he was married April 24, 1876. Of this union were born three children, two girls and one boy. The eldest, a girl, passed away when eleven years old; the other girl is at home with her parents, and the son, E. D. Canatsey, is attending school at Barnes' Medical College, St. Louis, Mo., and will graduate in 1904.
Mr. Canatsey continued his work, increasing his farm little by little, until now he owns two hundred and eighty (280) acres of some of the best farming land in Scott county, and is one of the most thriving farmers. he has never taken an active part in politics, but nevertheless he has always been a democrat in principle, and has been a staunch supporter of the democratic ticket. He has a nice comfortable home, and enjoys farming better than any other occupation.
