To the class of county officials who have succeeded themselves in office and are the second time serving the people, belongs the subject of this sketch. Irwin F. Coultas is the son of James and Margaret Ann (Frost) Coultas, and was born in Scott county, upon the farm where he now resides, October 27, 1855. His father, Uncle James Coultas, was born in Pickering, Yorkshire, England, March 4, 1830, and came to this country when he was a babe less than two months old. His mother, Margaret Ann (Frost) Coultas, is the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Peach) Frost, and was born in Sheffield, England, May 13, 1833, and came with her parents to America in 1840.
Irwin F. Coultas is one in a family of seven children, all of whom are now living. He was reared upon his present home farm and was educated in the country schools. Today he is one of the enterprising farmers of the county. April 21, 1885, he was married to Miss Eliza Townsend, a native of England. Four children - Mary, Lois, Margaret and James - have been born to them, and all are living.
Mr. Coultas is a very staunch republican and is now serving his second term as county commissioner. He believes that only good business men should be chosen to that office and that safe conservative business methods should apply to the management of the county's affairs. He is discharging his duty faithfully and well, and fully merits the confidence which the people have reposed in him.
