One of the best known physicians in this part of the state is Dr. W. C. Day. He was born at Hopefield, Crittenden county, Arkansas, January 24, 1837. When he was three years old his parents moved to Southwest Missouri. There he was reared and received his literary education. He then took up the study of medicine and graduated from the Missouri Medical college in the spring of 1861, and received the Ad Eundem degree from the St. Louis Medical college in 1871. In 1880 he took a post-graduate course in the Chicago Medical college, and in 1892, the advanced course for practitioners at the New York Polyclinic Medical College and Hospital. During the civil war he served as surgeon in the union army for three years and was mustered out of the service after the war closed. Dr. Day has been quite a writer and is the author of several exhaustive scientific papers on medical and other topics. He is a member of the Illinois state medical society, and the Macoupin county society for medical improvement. He has been professor of obstetrics in the Barnes Medical college, St. Louis, since 1892, and has filled the position with credit to himself and honor to the college. he is an ex-member of the Winchester board of U. S. pension examiners.
Dr. Day has been twice married. His first wife was Miss Lettie Allmond, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. R. J. Allmond of Palmyra, Macoupin county, Illinois. To her he was married, February 20, 1866. Four children blessed their union. One, a daughter, is dead, and the remaining three are residents of Winchester, as follows:
Dr. Lewis R. - educated at Palmyra and graduated from Barnes Medical college in April, 1894.
Anna A. - married D. G. Mayes, December 31, 1889. Died, August 31, 1900. One child, W. C. Day Mayes, was born to them.
Dr. J. A., born at Palmyra, October 29, 1869. Educated at public schools; Iowa College, Grinnell, Iowa; Christian Brothers College, St. Louis, and the Missouri University, Columbia, Missouri. Graduated from the St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons in 189, and received the Ad Eundem degree from Barnes medical College, St. Louis, in 1893. He took an advanced post-graduate course in the New York Polyclinic College and Hospital in 1894-95. he is a member of the Morgan county medical society and an ex-member of the Winchester board U.S. pension examiners. He has just returned from an extended tour (two years) of England and the continent, where he studied in the best clinical colleges and hospitals at London and Leeds, England; Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden, Germany; Vienna, Austria and Berne, Switzerland.
Dr. Lois Gertrude - educated at Winchester and graduated from Southwestern Optical College, Kansas City, Missouri, in 1902.
Mrs. Day died October 1, 1878, and on July 4, 1880, Dr. Day was married to Miss Bessie Harris. April 1, 1881, Dr. Day became a resident of Winchester and since that time has practiced his profession among this people. He is a Master Mason, a Royal Arch Mason and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. As a citizen, a soldier and a physician he stands high and is entitled to a position among the honored and respected of Scott county.
