C. S. DOYLE

When but ten years of age C. S. Doyle came with his parents to Scott county and settled on a farm five miles east of Winchester. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, December 26, 1848. He was reared upon a farm and in the main his education was obtained at Harts school. He worked on the farm until 1873 when he went to Winchester and engaged in the sewing machine business. This he followed until 1877, when he embarked in the marble and granite business. In 1879, he still further branched out and entered the implement business. Shortly after this a partnership was formed with John Knapp, who retained his interest two years and then sold out to Mr. Doyle, who conducted the business for a season and took John P. Hardwick into it as a partner. Hardwick remained a year and sold his interest back to Mr. Doyle who conducted the business by himself until 1886, when T. S. Collins bought a half interest in the concern and for a period of seven years the firm name was Doyle & Collins. Those were prosperous times and a good business was built up. In 1893 Mr. Doyle closed out his interest in the implement line and devoted his attention exclusively to the marble and granite business. In the fall of '94 he accepted a position as traveling salesman for the Winchester Milling Company and was with them until the spring of '96, when he again gave his undivided attention to the sewing machine and marble and granite business.

In the fall of 1898 he was appointed master in chancery for Scott county, was re-appointed in 1900 and again in 1902. He is a democrat, a Mason, an Odd Fellow and a splendid citizen. February 1, 1877, he was married to Miss Mary E. Wells, daughter of the late Thos. J. and Julia A Wells. One daughter, Miss Gertrude, has blessed their union, and is now the life, the sunshine of their home.

As a business man Mr. Doyle has been successful and as a court official he is faithfully, honestly and impartially discharging his every duty.
