ALBERT AND DAVID HAINSFURTHER

Among the leading merchants of Winchester may be classed the Hainsfurther Brothers. They have been reared in the business and from early childhood merchandising has been almost a second nature with them. The name Hainsfurther is almost a household word in Scott county. Way back yonder in 1859 Moses and Solomon Hainsfurther embarked in business in a moderate way in the Chapman building on the south side of the square. For nine years they dealt with the people from this building and then moved to the Flynn building on the west side of the square, where they remained for thirteen years. Their trade increased and with that increase came the increase in stock, and, in order to obtain more room, rented two rooms in the Smith building, just south of their old stand and opened out with a large stock of dry goods, carpets and notions in one room and boots, shoes and clothing in the other. In 1890 they built a new store building (now occupied by Sol Hainsfurther as a shoe store) and used it exclusively for clothing, hats, caps and gents furnishing goods. The business thus divided into three departments they made many improvements and added largely to their stock. In June, 1889, they purchased the shoe business of Daniel Smith, on the north side of the square and for a year conducted business there in conjunction with their other stores, but finally merged the stock into their own store on the west side. After the fire, in 1895, they, sharing with Daniel Smith, erected a splendid two story building, and when completed, moved their goods and occupied the entire building. During this same year (1895) they incorporated under the name of the Hainsfurther Mercantile Co., with the following incorporators: Solomon Hainsfurther, Sr., Moses Hainsfurther, Albert Hainsfurther, David Hainsfurther and Solomon Hainsfurther, Jr. This continued until February, 1901, when the corporation ceased to exist and the shoe department was sold to Solomon Hainsfurther, Jr., and the clothing, furnishings and dry goods departments to Albert and David Hainsfurther.

Solomon Hainsfurther, father of the Hainsfurther brothers, was born in Ichenhausen, Germany, December 22, 1824, and came to the United States in 1850, and to Winchester, Scott county, Illinois, 1857. June 2, 1855, he was married to Miss Yetta Kirschausen, daughter of Benedict Kirschausen, and to them seven children, four girls and three boys, were born. One of the sons is dead. Solomon Hainsfurther died July 14, 1900.

Albert Hainsfurther was born at Winchester, Illinois, January 7, 1863, and was educated in that city and at Jacksonville. At Chicago, September 12, 1893, he was married to Miss Bertha Mure, daughter of George and Julia (Simmons) Mure, and to them three children - Henrietta, Julia, and Albert, Jr., - have been born. He is a Master Mason, a Royal Arch Mason and an Odd Fellow.

David Hainsfurther was born at Winchester, October 26, 1867, and received his education at Winchester and at a Chicago business college. At Quincy, June 8, 1892, he was married to Miss Nellie Berger, daughter of Simeon and Theresa (Weinberg) Berger. Mrs. Hainsfurther was born in Quincy, October 8, 1869. Two children - Dorothy and Madeline - have come to bless their home. Mr. Hainsfurther enjoys membership with the Masons and Odd Fellows.

The Hainsfurther brothers are Winchester products; have spent their lives in Scott county, and are deserving of the success they have attained.
